English Language Bookstores in Rome

Of the dozen or more English-language bookstores in Rome, we have a few favorites, as follow. Each is an ideal place to find books about Roman culture, cuisine and photography.

For more than 50 years, the unassuming Lion Bookshop and Cafe has been a browsing and meeting place for English-speaking Romans, expatriates and visitors. In its location at Via dei Greci 33-36, a five-minute walk from the Spanish Square, there is a reading room where customers may have coffee or tea while sampling items from the shelves bulging with English-language classics and novelties. A notice board is posted with information about apartments or rooms for rent, babysitters, translators, and language teachers.Open 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tues-Sun; 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays. The Anglo-American Book Co., also near the Spanish Square, has a vast assortment of English-language literature and, in a separate building diagonally across the street, a well- stocked technical/sciences department. The main bookstore is open Tues-Sat, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Mondays 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; closed Sundays. The technical bookstore is open 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (closed 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for lunch) Mon-Fri, and closed Sat-Sun. Via della Vite 102 (main store). Tel: 39-06 -679-5222. Feltrinelli International, opposite the Grand Hotel, has thousands of books in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Russian. Catering specifically to tourists, the store is open seven days from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (reduced hours during two weeks in August).
