The new, expanded Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, occupying what was formerly known as the Duke of York’s Headquarters, is one of the world’s largest contemporary art museums. The gallery was originally opened by Charles Saatchi (famed advertising mogul and husband of Domestic Goddess Nigella Lawson) to display his controversial, and constantly evolving, collection of artworks.

Inclusion in his collection has launched the careers of several young British and American artists, not least of whom was Damien Hirst. Duke of York’s Square, Kings Road (SW3). www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk.

Note that a popular outdoor market is held here in front of Partridges (2-5 Duke of York’s Square) on Saturdays from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. with farmers, artisanal food producers and oyster stands.
